Sing and Sign
Supporting Children’s Communication Skills Through “Sing and Sign” at Brainy Bugs
We believe that strong communication skills are the foundation of a child’s ability to learn, connect, and express themselves confidently. For young children who are still developing their verbal skills, it can be challenging to convey their needs and emotions effectively, which sometimes leads to frustration.
To help bridge this gap, we incorporate “Sing and Sign” sessions into our weekly activities. This unique approach uses a blend of songs and simple sign language, giving children the tools to communicate and express themselves long before they can fully articulate their thoughts with words.

What is Sing and Sign?
“Sing and Sign” is a program designed to support children’s early language and communication skills through song and sign language. By learning simple signs for words and concepts, children can express basic needs, emotions, and ideas. These sessions are structured to be age-appropriate, engaging, and playful so children can have fun while building foundational language skills.
Our “Sing and Sign” sessions involve songs with gestures and signs for familiar words such as “more,” “happy,” “milk,” and “friend.” This combination of visual and auditory learning makes it easier for young children to grasp and remember new words, encouraging communication with both peers and caregivers.
Benefits of Sing and Sign for Early Communication:
Reduces Frustration and Builds Confidence
“Sing and Sign” allows children to communicate their needs without relying solely on speech. For example, they can sign if they want more food, if they’re feeling tired, or if they’re excited. Being able to express these things reduces frustration and builds confidence, as children feel heard and understood. This ability to communicate also creates a positive foundation for building relationships with their peers and caregivers.
Enhances Language Development
The combination of singing and signing strengthens vocabulary by associating spoken words with visual symbols. For example, as children sing about animals and sign for “cat” or “dog,” they are better able to connect the words with the animals they represent. Studies have shown that children exposed to signing at an early age tend to have larger vocabularies and stronger language skills as they grow.
Encourages Emotional Expression and Understanding
Singing about emotions and using signs for feelings such as “happy,” “sad,” or “angry” teaches children to identify and express emotions in a healthy way. At Brainy Bugs, we find this incredibly valuable for emotional development, as children learn to recognise and manage their feelings. When they see other children sign about their emotions, they begin to understand empathy and respond with care and kindness.
Promotes Social Interaction and Bonding
Group “Sing and Sign” sessions encourage children to interact, take turns, and participate together, creating a sense of belonging. Signing becomes a shared language, fostering stronger bonds between children as they learn and communicate together. By making eye contact, listening to each other, and joining in song, children practice the social skills that are essential for positive friendships.
How We Use Sing and Sign at Brainy Bugs
Each week at Brainy Bugs, we set aside time for our “Sing and Sign” sessions, which are led by experienced early childhood educators trained in sign language. Our teachers introduce new signs gradually, focusing on themes relevant to the children’s experiences, like family, friends, emotions, and daily routines.
Interactive Story time with Signs
To make learning even more fun, we incorporate signs into story time. For example, when reading about animals, we use the signs for different animals, allowing children to actively engage with the story. This reinforces language and storytelling skills in an interactive way.
Using Familiar songs
We sing to well-known nursery rhymes and melodies, which helps children remember the songs and signs. Familiar tunes make it easier for young children to follow along and encourages active participation.
Encouraging Use of Signs Beyond Sing and Sign Sessions
Throughout the day, our educators encourage children to use signs during play, meals, and transitions. This way, signing becomes a natural part of their communication, helping them express
Celebrating Small Successes
Every time a child uses a sign correctly—whether to ask for a toy, express a feeling, or say “thank you”—we celebrate it with encouragement and praise. This builds their confidence and reinforces the idea that communication is valuable and rewarding.
Sing and Sign Activities to Try at Home
Sing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” with Simple Signs
Introduce signs for words like “star,” “wonder,” and “sky” as you sing. This is a fun way to reinforce language at home with a favourite song.
Use Signs for Family Members
Teach simple signs for “mum,” “dad,” “brother,” and “sister.” Your child will love being able to communicate about family, and this activity builds vocabulary and family bonds.
Emotion Sign Game
Make a game out of showing signs for emotions like “happy,” “sad,” “excited,” and “scared.” Ask your child to show how they feel by using a sign, helping them understand and express their emotions in a healthy way.
Building Communication Skills for Life
At Brainy Bugs, “Sing and Sign” is more than just a weekly activity—it’s a bridge to a world where children feel seen, heard, and empowered to express themselves. By introducing simple signs, we’re helping children develop strong language skills, emotional awareness, and confidence.
